Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Winter 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/28/2023
One of the nicest 1969-70 O-Pee-Chee hockey card sets that we recall landing on our doorstep is offered here and includes submission candidates galore, with NM-or-better cards the norm and captivating NM-MT-or-better cards appearing to form a majority. Obvious minor flaws are few and far between; we do not spot another corner ding like the one that lowered Bobby Orr’s regular (#24) issue to EX-MT 6. Bobby’s 209-Norris Trophy card leads the PSA-assessed six pack, earning coveted MINT 9 recognition, with dozens of 2nd series entries mirroring it, their “blue” right edges well-known to ’69-70 OPC high grade aficionados. Orr’s 212-All-Star card and Tony Esposito’s RC recently received marks of NM 7 at PSA, while strictly graded, in our opinion, are EX-MT 6 examples of 30-Phil Esposito and 61-Gordie Howe. Mr. Hockey’s special card (NM) is the no number version, with other raw most notables including 5-Serge Savard RC (NM (OC)) and the two unmarked checklists; 31-1st Series has the tiniest of creases near a (back) corner, with 132-2nd Series exhibiting a diamond cut and otherwise NM. Just one creased card, 229-Smythe Trophy, was detected upon our inspection, with a surface indention (210-Savard Smythe Trophy) and some surface scratches (37-Gilbert) also spotted. It should be noted that 1st series cards do not all measure the same; there are markedly short examples but that’s definitely not the result of trimming. The one card not present is 214-Esposito All-Star. In short, lovers of like-new cardboard will be tempted by this sensational ensemble, with a perusing treat in store for the astute high bidder.
