The 6th overall pick in the 1986 Major League Baseball Draft by the Milwaukee Brewers, Gary Sheffield would go on to enjoy a 22-year career in the big leagues, winning the 1992 National League Batting Championship and a World Series with the Florida Marlins in 1997. Presented here is this late-1980s rookie-era Mizuno glove used by Sheffield. All-black in colour with Mizuno patches on the backside at the wrist and pocket, the good remains in good overall condition. The leather on the frontside of the glove remains reasonably supple with light cracking found in the pocket which shows heavy wear from repeated use. The lacing all remains intact and the fingertips show scuffing/fraying. The backside is of the glove is a mesh construction that remains in excellent condition with a large handwritten silver “1” (Gary’s number in 1988 and 89) found over the thumb. Sheffield has also signed the pinky finger with a fine silver ink signature that has faded somewhat overtime. It should be noted that in the accompanying LOA, the glove is listed as being from 1990-91 but Sheffield had changed his number to “11” from the “1” seen penned on the glove and worn in 1988 and 1989.
