Held in place of the NHL All-Star Game, Rendez-Vous '87 was an international series between the Soviet national squad and a team of All-Stars from the NHL. Games were played in Quebec City, with the Russians taking the two-game series on aggregate, 8-7. Hailing from the Barry Meisel collection, we offer this used by Mark Messier during the all-star showdown that has been signed by 21 members of the NHL All-Stars squad including Gretzky, Lemieux and Messier.
A Sher-Wood PMP 9030 mode that remains free from cracks or breaks, “Messier” and “11” appear on the upper shaft, with “11” also handwritten in black ink just above the name stamp. Retaining its original black tape job over both the handle/knob and blade, five (5) spots of dried up black and white tape residue are observed over the shaft. Exhibiting light-to-moderate game-use, small tears and puck marks are seen on both sides of the blade tape while a few other black marks are seen over the heel and lower shaft, particularly on the backhand side. The rest of the shaft shows varying marks and abrasions from top to bottom.
Additionally, to add to the beauty and appeal of the piece, a piece of white tape has been added to the forehand side of the shaft and has been signed by 21 members of the NHL All-Stars that took part in the series in a mix of black pen and marker. Labeled “Rendez-Vous 87” at the top of the stick, the signers include: Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, Mark Messier, Claude Lemieux, Grant Fuhr, Chris Chelios, Dave Poulin, Kirk Muller, Michel Goulet, Esa Tikkanen, Keven Dineen, Dale Hawerchuk, Glenn Anderson, Ulf Samuelsson, Ray Bourque, Rick Green, Rod Langway, Mike Ramsey and Clint Malarchuk. All the autographs remain legible while displaying varying degrees of fading/aging, particularly those that has signed near the top of the stick.
