The friendly confines of Wrigley Field in Chicago became a little less friendly on New Year’s Day in 2009, when the hometown Chicago Black Hawks found themselves pitted against Original Six rival the Detroit Red Wings. The conclusion of the game saw 40,818 people file unhappily out of Wrigley that afternoon as the visiting Red Wings - wearing jerseys based off those worn by the 1926-27 Detroit Cougars - defeated the Blackhawks by a final score of 6-4 after scoring 5 unanswered goals. This signed Red Wings jersey was issued for Derek Meech’s use during the first period (Meech never played in the game), and it is accompanied by uniform socks most likely worn at practices leading-up to the Winter Classic. CCM labeling with “56” sizing is affixed to the collar along with a screened “1” for first period, with NHL and Reebok crests gracing the front and reverse necklines respectively. Styled with a large Old English “D” in single white twill, “14” is sewn to the sleeves and verso with the 2009 Winter Classic crest over the right breast. Meech has signed the reverse “4” in black marker. Never worn, the jersey remains in like-new condition, while the size “XL” Reebok socks with “14” handwritten show wear from use with marks visible. A MeiGray patch numbered “F04831” is affixed to the inside hem, and according to their population report, the jersey is a "White Retro - Winter Classic 1/1/2009 - DNP During Period 1" specimen. A COA from the Red Wings will accompany.
