A hoard of O-Pee-Chee cards from the first half of the 1980s is somewhat difficult to decipher/summarize and you’ll see what we’re talking about. Approximately 400 cards from 1982-83 are in a binder and are sorted by teams, with seemingly few duplicates, so likely a complete set or close to it. A Grant Fuhr rookie card (EX-MT), is joined by NM-or-better Francis, Hawerchuk and Mullen RCs, with Gretzky and other pulled stars similarly sharp (or sharper), with plenty of apparent NM-MT, NM-MT+ and MINT contributors. By team is also how a group of ’84-85 cards are displayed in another binder, with the cards back-to-back in 9-pocket pages and again, likely a set or near set. Generally, crisp cards are again to report, with a NM Yzerman rookie card leading the lineup but the other key RCs all exhibiting a flaw; Gilmour has a touched lower right corner, Chelios a bottom edge ding and Neely a botched/rough cut on the left edge. Some beauty NM-MT and better cards are however to be discovered. ...Oh boy, now it’s on to the big supply of ’83-84 representatives. There are 540 cards (with duplication) in one album, while in another cards are back to back and with between two and five of each player – thank goodness for large “Enor” pockets(!). Actually, the binder of 500+ also has some 50 league leader, team leader and other specials from ’82-83 (we count 11 featuring Gretzky), along with 14 pages of similar cards from ’83-84 (22 with Wayne). The reference to near and possible sets in our title comes from the pulling, for instance, of three Gretzkys, five of the Gretzky/Messier card, four each of Lindberg, Carbonneau and Nalsund RCs, a couple of Stevens, three of Housley, etc., etc., with NM-or-better cards the norm and again dozens and dozens in the NM-MT to MINT range. Sorting, set-building, pricing, selling, grading – talk about options – you’ll be busy, busy while remembering The Great One during his heyday!
