Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction September 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 9/19/2023
An intriguing offering here features one-third of the Chicago Cubs’ double play combination that led to a lamenting New York writer’s “Tinkers-to-Evers-to-Chance” line in “Baseball’s Sad Lexicon” poem, with shortstop Joe Tinker and his famous infield mates reportedly turning their first double play in September of 1902. The Cubs were a dynasty by the time T206 cards were issued, (World Series champs in 1907 and 1908), with this Old Mill Cigarettes back examples of Tinker's "Hands on Knees" card surviving in desirable EX-MT 6 condition. A stunning Pop-1 highest graded example of this back, the card, inspected and slabbed many many moons ago, presents with stunning colours over the front with an image that is off-center from left-to-right. With clean surfaces other than a small spot on the reverse, the corners remain gorgeous for a card of this age with a ding observed to the bottom left point, housed in an old style PSA holder, scratches and scuffs are observed over both sides that are worth mentioning for accuracy.
