Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2020
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 10/20/2020
From the historic season that last witnessed an NHL goaltender wearing the prestigious “C” of his club, the 1947-48 Montreal Canadiens were led as such by the steadfast Bill Durnan, with the captain’s duties shared with longtime Habs’ leader Toe Blake that season. This extremely rare photo feature’s the 1947-48 Montreal Canadiens. At approx 10” x 19”, the team is depicted in the typical pose, with a number of HOF members pictured including a youthful Maurice Richard. The Rice Studios logo appears over the bottom right, with a stamp from the famous photographer also appearing over the reverse. We should note that this is the only example of this utterly rare team photo we have ever handled, with the probable likelihood that these high quality prints by noted lensman Rice were only produced to present to players.
While condition is not ideal, the photo displays beautifully, and when considering the utter rarity of this image, any shortcomings can be easily forgiven. A number of creases are present throughout on the glossy stock print, with single edge tears at each side as well as the top and bottom, with all four corners intact.
