Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2020

Scoring the first hat trick in NHL history in 1917, Harry Hyland made his professional debut with the Montreal Shamrocks in 1908-09, and won a Stanley Cup championship the following season with the fabled Montreal Wanderers. The 1962 HOF inductee would famously score eight goals in a single contest vs Joe Malone and the Quebec Bulldogs, in 1912-13. Originating from the incomparable autograph collection of E. Robert Hamlyn, we have an especially rare and desirable 1910-11 Sweet Caporal postcard of Hyland signed by the early superstar, and it was originally sent to Hamlyn by legendary player Jack Marshall! Just under the standard 3 ½” x 5 ½” and picturing the Montreal native in his Wanderers uniform, Hyland has added a DARK and unimprovable black ink signature along the bottom left. One of the only known existing signed Sweet Caporal postcards, we cannot stress enough how rare, unique and historically paramount the offered specimen is.
Hyland would sadly leave us in 1969 at 80 years-of-age. As mentioned, the signature is bold and flawless, with the postcard itself surviving beautifully, with a crisp image that is well centered. There is wear at each corner along with additional wear along a few edges, with a crease over the bottom right that displays more prominently over the reverse. Text has also been typed over the reverse that includes “This photo of one of hockey’s greatest players of “bygone days” sent to me by Jack Marshall – Montreal – May 16th, 1957”.
