Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2019
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/5/2019
Arguably hockey’s most iconic goaltender and forever immortalized by hobbyists with his 1911-12 C55 hockey card one of the most desirable and valuable extant, Georges Vezina guarded the Montreal Canadiens net for his entire career, with his legacy the trophy that proudly bears his name. We have an especially rare photo of the legendary netminder, with this specimen certified as Type I by PSA/DNA. At approx 7 ¼” x 9 ¼” and shuttered by noted lensman S. J. Hayward (his name is embossed over the bottom right, with a stamp over the reverse), Vezina is pictured in his full Habs uniform, including his trademark toque. A few handwritten notations are present over the reverse along with a “Reference Dept” date stamp of Feb 20, 1926, with the photo itself earlier, datable to approx the 1922-23 to 1924-25 seasons based on the style of his uniform. Vezina would pass away just a month after the photo was date stamped. An LOA from PSA/DNA will accompany.
The photo exhibits some surface wear and wrinkles, with a large horizontal crease that runs across the top third, not affecting Vezina’s image. There is also toning over the reverse, with a sticker numbered “1P06289” from PSA/DNA over the bottom right corner.
