Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2019

Issued the season after Patrick Roy backstopped the Montreal Canadiens to an unlikely Stanley Cup, the Conn Smythe Trophy winner’s rookie card leads the lineup in O-Pee-Chee’s 1986-87 set. Superb high grade NM-MT, NM-MT+ and MINT cards look to be the norm with this inviting assembly, with however the Roy RC exhibiting some grade-lowering flaws. We spot light touches/dings at the bottom two corners, along with a couple of subtle surface indentations, rendering card #53 no better than EX-MT. Still, an attractive well-centered example. The second-year Mario Lemieux card (NM) is off-centered top-to-bottom, with a touched upper right corner, but it’s not easy spotting flaws among the other key cards pulled from the pages/binder where they’ve laid for many years. The star power is led by Wayne Gretzky and Steve Yzerman, while most notable among three dozen rookie cards are those of Wendel Clark and John Vanbiesbrouck. Also pictured on RCs are Ray Ferraro, Steve Thomas, John MacLean, Russ Courtnall and Gary Suter.
