Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2019
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/26/2019
From the first year/series of baseball "Exhibits" comes this offering, led by the iconic Ty Cobb. The longtime Detroit star was in his 17th season with the Tigers and hit .389 in 1921 and then followed that up with a .401 average in '22, with the blank-backed exhibit card here scoring Good 2 at PSA. All of other subjects, except for one, are National Leaguers, with St. Louis' John "Doc" Lavan and Pittsburgh's Geo. B. Whitted best at EX 5. Slabbed VG-EX 4 are St. Louis' J.F. Fournier, Cleveland's W.L. Gardner and Philadelphia's Jimmy Ring, while a VG 3 representative is a horizontal shot Phillies' 1st baseman Ed Konetchy, his mitt and "stretch" intriguing. Also present are Good 2 examples of Boston Braves' outfielder Raymond R. Powell and Philadelphia infielder Joe "Goldie" Rapp. These cards of 1921 are characterized by the ornate hand-lettered names while similar cards of 1922-24 have the names of players handwritten in a plainer style. Interesting images of uniforms and equipment await the high bidder.
