Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2019
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/26/2019
A low grade batch of cards from the card boom of the 1930s, when several companies got involved in producing hockey cards, is offered here and includes some important star power, along with a few aesthetically-pleasing examples. Most impressive/noteworthy is Howie Morenz's 1936-37 O-Pee-Chee Series "D" (not "popped") card #121 that has an EX-MT appearance when viewing the front but which is dropped to Poor due to heavy paper loss on the reverse from once having been glued. Another key card from that set is present, with Eddie Shore's #118 example partially "popped", creased and with glue residue/staining on the back. Tiny specs of glue are also observed on the front. An Aurele Joliat "Ice Kings" card, (English only back) features EX-MT attributes with pleasing corners and edges but falls to VG due to a light top-to-bottom vertical crease. Crease-free and EX-MT-looking cards of #52-Hap Day and 91-Neil Colville from World Wide Gum's '37-38 black and white issue are lowered by back damage (glue residue), with however all text intact and legible. Colorful contributors are '33-34 Hamilton Gum cards of 14-Wildor Larochelle (P-F) and Lorne Chabot (P), with Chabot also appearing on an Ice Kings card (P). A Howie Morenz Canadian Chewing Gum card (P) is soiled, creased and has trimmed (rounded) corners, while a Gerald Carson example from the same issue had its letter/section at the bottom cut off. Meanwhile, missing parts of their upper sections are '36-37 OPC cards of goalies 97-Broda, 107-Karakas and 120-Cude, as well as Maple Leafs 99-Shill and 103-Fowler.
