Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2019
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/26/2019
Representing the world’s fastest game on British soil, we have a rarely-seen group of real photo postcards totaling 8 and featuring members of England’s Brighton Tigers hockey team from circa-1937, along with a team postcard of the Harringay Greyhounds club from 1937-38. Winners of the British Championship in 1960, Brighton postcards include players John Taugher (signed), Bob Purdie, John Hamilton, Van Gibson, Jimmy Borland, Al Rogers, Gordon Poirier and coach Don Penniston. Four of the postcards have “Sports Stadium” stamps over the reverse, suggesting distribution at the arena, with handwritten text over the reverse of the Penniston example. The Harringay team composite postcard feature’s cameo images of team members, with a stamp over the blank reverse from “Lee Photographer”, situated within the postal box. Moderate handling wear is the only concern here, with the majority of the postcards crease and wrinkle free, with some minor corner and surface wear present on each, along with light toning and edge wear.
