Starting life as a Class-A ball club in the late-19th century, the Montreal Royals would become the top farm club of the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1939, with the story of baseball pioneer Jackie Robinson making his professional minor league debut with the club the stuff of legends. We have an original 1939 team photo negative, along with original team photos from both 1955 (2) and 1958. There is also a photo with teammates pictured along with unidentified individuals from the mid-1940s, along with an example from 1945 featuring an on-field presentation that’s been signed by pitcher Jean P. Roy and Stan Breard.
The 1939 negative is just under 8” x 10” and it pictures the full club posed on-field at Delorimier Stadium, with two modern prints of the image included. The negative shows wear, but remains in excellent condition. The glossy 1955 print pictures the pennant winners in full uniform, including Don Drysdale, Tommy Lasorda and manager Greg Mulleavy, and it remains in excellent condition, with a stamp on the reverse from David Bier Studios. The matching 1958 photos again picture the club in an on-field team pose, with Sparky Anderson and Tommy Lasorda pictured. Both black and white photos exhibit light wear, including some minor creasing, with stamps from photographer Jerry Donati along with his Montreal address on the reverse. The mid-1940s photo is 8” x 10” and it pictures a pair of uniformed members, encompassed by 15 others. Signed by Jean Paul Roy and Stan Breard, it is assumed they are the uniform players pictured. With some minor surface wear, toning and light creasing, the photo remains in very good condition. Lastly, the 1955-dated photo shows members on-field with others for a presentation. Text sits below in French that was applied directly to the negative, with the Grover Mills Ltd warehouse visible in the background. A Velox photo taken of a second photo, the print remains in very good condition with some toning and surface wear present, along with a few small creases.
