Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2016

The 1995-96 season was special for Mario Lemieux, where he would not only lead the league in scoring, but would net his milestone 500th career goal as well as win the Art Ross, Hart Memorial and Lester B. Pearson Trophies. This Penguins captain’s jersey was worn by Lemieux in the 1996 playoffs, and it’s been photo-matched! CCM size tagging sits on the collar with handwritten “66 c”, with embroidered CCM and NHL crests on the back bottom hem. Featuring the Penguins team crest used throughout the 1990s, the jersey also features dual-colour tackle twill numbers. Getty image #115261596 from May 1st 1996 has been matched to the black mark in the middle of the captain's "C", to the black mark on top of the second "6" of "66" on the right sleeve, and to a number of other marks on the same sleeve below. An LOA from Classic Auctions will accompany this highly desirable Lemieux jersey.
We should note that the Pens played on April 26th 1996 at home vs Washington, and then on May 3rd vs the Rangers, so the date of the image from the aforementioned photo-match is most likely incorrect, but it does originate from the playoffs. Game-wear on the Hall of Fame sweater is heavy, with numerous puck and stick marks on the sleeves and lower front, especially along the lower band. Board burns are also present on the numbers of each sleeve, along with a few small holes near the right elbow.
