Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2016
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/15/2016
Despite being seen as the Series underdogs, the Cincinnati Reds actually compiled a better record than Chicago throughout the 1919 campaign, finishing 96-44. Led by Ed Roush, along with a solid pitching staff that included Hod Eller and Dutch Ruether, the Reds were definitely competition for the highly talented Black Sox. With the fix in, the newly-formatted best-of-nine Series would go eight games with Cincinnati scoring 10 runs in the final game, including 4 in the first. Arguably the most discussed and lamented World Series in history, in this lot we have an unscored program from the Series that was issued at Redland Field. As a point of reference, an unscored 1919 World Series program in superior condition sold at auction by Goldin realized $1684.10 including the Buyers Premium.
Large and perfect for display at 9” x 12”, the program exhibits a number of flaws including some paper loss to the front cover at the bottom staple, along with small additional pieces that are missing at the top and bottom. Completely detached, the cover also has tape along the spine and some toning, as well as a few pieces on the inside front and back cover. The interior pages are fairly clean, with a few exhibiting small edge tears, with the White Sox team photo in the center spread displaying beautifully.
