Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction February 2016

Before suffering a serious concussion in 1968, HOFer Stan Mikita was one of the meanest and toughest players in the NHL. Mikita was one of the first to wear a helmet in order to satisfy his needs. The offered helmet is one of the earliest, if not the first type he tried and it appears to be game-worn although we cannot be certain it was worn in NHL game play. Displaying large holes on the top of the shell, this style was shelved after the first year of use, and he later opted for a closed-crown example. A superb piece representing the 500 goal scorer, it was designed by craftsman Monty Ford in 1969-70. The historic helmet is handmade from a high impact poly blend and is by no means anything like the later Lange and Northland models that were mass-produced for consumer use. One of few Mikita lids to enter the hobby, this one exhibits light wear throughout. Comes with two detailed letters of authenticity including one from the ex-Gunzos employee who originally obtained it.
Included is a copy of a black and white image of Mikita wearing the exact same style shell in a match against the Montreal Canadiens and we spot a small crack at the front that looks to be a match the same flaw on this helmet.
