Prince Edward was born Edward Albert Christian George Patrick David Windsor, known as His Highness Prince Edward of York at birth. He was known to friends and family as David. He becamed Prince of Wales and Earl of Chester June 2, 1910 when his father, King George V was crowned King of the United Kingdom. He was the Prince of Wales until January 20, 1936 when he became King Edward VIII. During this time he travelled abroad as an ambassador of the Monarchy, and donated the Prince of Wales Trophy to the NHL in 1924. An excerpt from the Montreal Gazette, Dec. 7, 1925: "The Prince of Wales stands sponsor for the new trophy in testimonial of the national winter sport of the Dominion of Canada, a Dominion in which he is personally interested as a land owner and which he visits as frequently as possible. The Prince has never had the good fortune to see professional hockey at its best as played in the Dominion, but he has seen the game in Europe and is very fond of the winter sport. Princess Patricia, his royal cousin, while her father, the Duke of Connaught, was Governor-General of Canada, was a most enthusiastic devotee of hockey and seldom missed a championship match. Perhaps her kindly offices had something to do in persuading the Prince of Wales to lend his name to this newest of all international sport trophies which in time may become the foremost." He became King Edward VIII on Jan. 20, 1936 and reigned as King for 326 days; he voluntarily abdicated the throne in December of 1936 so that he could marry an American divorcee, Ms. Wallis Simpson. After his abdication, he and Simpson became the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. During WWI, Edward served with the Grenadier Guards and was awarded the Military Cross in 1916, he was also in the Royal Navy and the Royal Air Force; he was the first member of British royalty to become a qualified pilot. During WWII, Edward was installed as Governor of the Bahamas; he was the first British Monarch to hold a civilian political office, which he held from 1940-45. Edward died in Paris, May 28, 1972.
