Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2014

Hall of Fame goalie Clint Benedict was the first NHL netminder to wear a mask during a game, nearly 30 years before fellow HOFer Jacques Plante put one on to begin a revolution in facial protection for the men between the pipes. Offered is a superb 1930s Spalding leather goalie mask in the style worn briefly by Benedict with the Montreal Maroons. The Spalding logo is embossed on the front of the headstrap attached to the top of the mask, which measures roughly 6" x 5 1/2" as worn across the front of the face and features rigid protection of the nose, forehead, cheeks and chin. A rudimentary start, this vintage and original first model of mask worn by an NHL goaltender is a must for your collection and a guaranteed conversation starter!
