Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2013

Grant Fuhr grew up in the shadow of Edmonton, the city in which he would later star and assist in the winning of five Stanley Cup Championships. Joining the Oilers in 1981, Fuhr would dazzle between the pipes, winning the Vezina Trophy as the NHL's top netminder in 1988. Over nineteen seasons, Grant roamed the crease in Edmonton, Toronto, Buffalo, Los Angeles, St. Louis and Calgary before retiring prior to the 2000-2001 season. Through 868 regular season contests, Fuhr collected 403 wins, including 25 by shutout, and 114 ties. Offered is Grant's game-worn goalie mask, worn during his sophomore season while with the Edmonton Oilers. This battle-scarred mask boasts a fabulous white, orange and blue painted design with the number "31" inside an oil drop at each temple and is photo-matched and video-matched to the long scratch on the left upper area of the mask. The interior padding is intact and well-worn. A label on the inside reads "Grant Fuhr" and lists the name and address of maker Gerry Schultz. Schultz is well known among goalies from Western Canada. This former goalie turned mask maker fitted pros and amateurs in the Edmonton area throughout the Sixties and Seventies. His clients included WHA and NHL goalies such as Ken Brown, Chris Worthy, Jack Norris and most notably Grant Fuhr. Gerry's masks were extremely solid and he was the first maker to use Kevlar in his designs. The mask shows nice game use, inside and out and the paint job has been well preserved. This historic mask was originally obtained from former Oilers team photographer and noted collector Bob Mummery. Please take note that this lot may be subject to a silent reserve. With LOA.
