Six games into the 1989-90 season, on October 15, 1989, Wayne Gretzky became the NHL's all-time leading scorer, passing the great Gordie Howe. Though he was now a Los Angeles King, he did it, ironically, in Edmonton vs. the Oilers; and in typically dramatic fashion. After earning a first period assist to tie the record, Gretzky was held off the score sheet until less than a minute remained in the 3rd period, and the Oilers clinging to a 4-3 lead. With their goalie pulled, the Kings pressed the play in Edmonton's end, and a bouncing puck found its way to the Great One, who backhanded it past Bill Ranford to both tie the score and set a new NHL standard with his 1851st point. The Edmonton fans, with Howe in the crowd, erupted in a prolonged ovation to honor their former star. Once the game resumed, overtime ensued and, true to his legend, Gretzky scored the winner. Offered here are a near mint program and ticket stub from that historic game, an unforgettable event for all those who saw it unfold.
