Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction March 2011

Pittsburgh Penguins legend Mario Lemieux signed his superb #66 Wales Conference game-issued jersey from the 40th NHL All-Star Game. Super Mario was on his way to career highs in goals (85), assists (114), and points (199) during the 1988-89 season. This black airknit All-Star jersey was prepared for Lemieux, though it did not see action during the game. Despite the "C" sewn on the left breast of this game-ready beauty, Larry Robinson was the Wales' captain in the 1989 game so this #66 jersey may have been prepared for Lemieux as a contingency. Whatever the case, it is the real deal, with Mario dedicating "Best Wishes" on his black marker autograph on the left shoulder, above the NHL star and shield patch. The 40th NHL All-Star Game patch is sewn on the right shoulder. The Maska fly tag in the neck has size "52" written in ballpoint and the fight strap is intact. Accompanying this remarkable jersey is a Penguins certificate of authenticity, dated 2003 and signed by team president Kenneth Sawyer, a former NHL executive.
