Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction November 2010
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/16/2010
Here's a true rarity for autograph enthusiasts and hockey historians, a dual-signed photo studio portrait featuring the original signature of Lady Byng, the benefactor of the NHL trophy presented in her name. Evelyn Byng, the Viscountess Byng of Vimy, was the wife of Lord Byng, the 12th Governor General of Canada. The couple were avid hockey fans and frequently attended Ottawa Senators home games. Lady Byng, who died in Ottawa in 1949, donated the original Lady Byng Trophy to the NHL in 1925 to be presented to the "player adjudged to have exhibited the best type of sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct with a high standard of playing ability." Lady Byng signed "Evelyn Byng of Vimy" in the lower right corner of her portrait with British actress Eve Sandford, who also signed this 9 1/8" x 6 3/4" print mounted on 11" x 8" beige matte from Edward S. Curtis Studios at the Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles. Taken in the early 1930s, this is the first signed Lady Byng photo we have seen.
