Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction November 2010

If ever it could be said that a player was bigger than the game, Howie Morenz would be that player. Morenz played 11 seasons with the Montreal Canadiens, one with Chicago and a half a year with New York before returning to Montreal where he played until he broke his leg in 1937 during a game. He died six weeks later. Artist Arthur Hass has captured Howie in his Chicago Black Hawks uniform circa 1935 in this wonderful charcoal and ink original art rendering. But the real treat is the vintage fountain pen signature added by Howie Morenz at the bottom. And just below, teammate Lorne Chabot added his mark as well. Signed by the artist, Arthur Hass, and dated 1935, the art deco style drawing is simply screaming for matting and a classic frame. While both autographs are bold and legible, the Chabot has a thin wash of white paint running across the top portion, slightly obliterating it. The Morenz signature, as you can see in the photos, remains bold and untouched. Morenz passing in what was one of the saddest tales in hockey history, makes his signature very tough to obtain in any form or condition. The work is done on heavy-weight drawing paper using a mixture of charcoal, pen & ink and measures to 7.5" x 12" in size. Obtained from the daughter of artist Arthur Haas who was a commercial artist by trade. Haas gathered the signature back in 1934-35, around the time he completed the drawing. Will come with a letter of authenticity.
