Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2010
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/22/2010
Intriguing old wool sweater, identical in style to the ones worn by the players pictured in the 1912 and 1914 Princeton Hockey Club team photographs. The Hobey Baker-era sweater is crafted in thick black wool with a stylized felt letter "P" affixed to the chest which is identical in style to the ones seen on the jerseys of the Princeton Tigers players on the hockey team photos of 1912 and 1914. Furthermore the thick wool sewing threads seen on various areas of the jersey are also identical in style to the ones seen on the jerseys of the Princeton Tigers players on the hockey team photos of 1912 and 1914. A legend at Princeton University before the First World War, Hobey Baker was known as a one-man hockey team. Research reveals that although the hockey sweaters worn by the team had the round neck in those years while wool football sweaters worn by the Princeton Football team in the same era featured the v-neck styling leaving no doubt as this is a Princeton Tigers game-worn hockey jersey. Photographs of a wool college football uniform worn in 1911-12 show the identical A. G. Spalding & Bros tagging that appears sewn into the lower hem of the jersey which confirms that it is indeed a Princeton Tigers hockey game-worn jersey from the Hobey Baker era. The vintage uniform has been preserved in near-excellent condition with four smaller holes on the backside, another on the right cuff with some material pulls on the front. A fantastic and presentable display piece for Princeton and Hobey Baker enthusiasts.
