Impressive and rare WHA gold ring was created to commemorate the rebel league’s 1979 merger with the National Hockey League. This is one of four such rings designed and manufactured by Balfour on behalf of WHA founders Gary Davidson and Dennis Murphy when the Edmonton Oilers, New England (soon-to-become Hartford) Whalers, Quebec Nordiques and Winnipeg Jets joined the NHL. “World Hockey Association” is spelled out in raised gold around the bezel and a total of 24 cubic zircons surround the WHA logo featuring red and blue enamel on the tableau. The ring’s left shank features “Smith” and an alternate version of the WHA logo. The right shank also has “Smith” across the top in raised gold along with an image of the Avco Cup championship trophy. “Smith” is engraved in script inside the band, with “Balfour 10K” stamped beneath it. A unique and rarely seen WHA memento, indeed.
