This sensational original bronze CFL award was presented to Tony Gabriel as the 1978 Most Outstanding Player in the East Division. The Jeff Russel Memorial Trophy was presented to the great Ottawa Rough Rider tight end as the East finalist for the Schenley Award as the league's outstanding player of the year. Gabriel went on to win that award, too, beating out Edmonton quarterback Tom Wilkinson, who claimed the Jeff Nicklin Memorial Trophy as the West Division's Most Outstanding Player for the second time in five years but was unable to claim top league honors as he did in 1974. This remarkable trophy stands approximately 8 1/2" tall and features a tripod base that measures about 5 1/2" wide on each side. Awarded to the top player in the East from 1973 to 1994, the Russel Trophy was originally presented to the player best exemplifying skill, sportsmanship and courage in Canadian football beginning in 1928. Since 2003 it is awarded to the most outstanding player in the Quebec University Football League. A historic CFL award, it comes along with Tony Gabriel's signed letter of authenticity.
