What a rare and superb offering, here is an original studio team photo of the 1903 Stanley Cup champion Montreal Amateur Athletic Association hockey club. A decade after they became the original holders of the Cup in 1893, the MAAA team was back on top of the hockey world as defending Cup champions. Nicknamed "The Little Men of Iron" for their impenetrable defence, they regained the Cup in March of 1902 with a 2-1 challenge series win in Winnipeg. The MAAA defended its title at home in another 2-1 series win over Winnipeg in February 1903, though they finished the CAHL season behind the Ottawa Silver Seven, who went on to defeat the Montreal Victorias and claim the Cup. Offered here is an original 11" x 14 3/4" Swan Studio print of the 1903 MAAA team in the wake of its successful defence of Winnipeg's Cup challenge. The print is mounted on its original grey matte cardboard background beneath an image of the original Stanley Cup. A banner attached to the bottom of the 22" x 28" matte that was originally presented in a frame lists the team's name and its players, including the legendary Tommy Phillips, who appears seated in front at the far left of the studio photo. Fellow Hall-of-Famers Dickie Boon, Jimmy Gardner and Jack Marshall are also pictured along with teammates Art Hooper, George Smith, Tom Hodge, Billy Bellingham, Bill Nicholson and Cecil Blachford. The original print of the MAAA squad remains in excellent-plus condition, with nary a flaw to note. The right side of the matte background has a water stain and the edges have some nicks and rough spots, though overall it remains in very good condition. An exceptional vintage team photo of hockey's original Stanley Cup dynasty.
