Hockey Memorabilia Auction - Spring 2008
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/10/2008
Although most of us are very familiar with New York Rangers netminder Gilles Gratton’s famous painted cat mask, he did begin the 1976-77 season wearing a pair of Jofa helmet & cage combos. According to Gilles, he wore two versions of the combo style headgear for a handful of games before switching to the full-face fiberglass mask decorated with the snarling cat paint job that currently resides in the Hall of Fame in Toronto. Gratton wore this blue Jofa model 245 helmet with matching Jofa wire mask and chin cup whenever the team wore their road uniforms. He also wore a white set-up at MSG and we have found an action photo showing Gilles wearing the style. A vintage Rangers shield decal sit on the forehead and the interior padding has yellowed over the years. This wonderful lid will come with a copy of the photo showing the style-match and a letter of authenticity and provenance signed by Gilles Gratton. The winning bidder may also have the mask signed upon request.
