The story of Hockey Hall-of-Famer Hobey Baker’s prowess on a football field is brought forth by this first-rate cabinet photo that pictures the Princeton Tigers, an underdog team that Baker helped to top honors in the fall of 1911. In his sophomore year, Hobey impressed coaches during freshman games with his remarkably clean handling of difficult punts in high winds and became a fixture on the varsity squad after scoring a touchdown on a long run in the opening varsity game. By November, Princeton was still undefeated and upset Harvard, generally regarded as the best team in the country, winning 8-6 in front of over 22,000 fans at Princeton’s University Field. A 3-0 victory over Dartmouth was then followed by a 6-3 win over Yale, Baker’s handling of numerous punts in mud bowl-like conditions in the final game earning him, as newspaper accounts stated, “a very high place in the admiration of the spectators.” Baker, pictured seated at the far right here, joined his mates for a great dinner held by the Philadelphia Princeton Club which presented each member of the national champions with inscribed gold cuff links. Affixed to a 7” by 9” mat, the matte-finish photo here is approximately 4-1/2” by 6” and in excellent condition with no notable flaws. Two small edge tears and corner/edge wear to the mat are to mention. Difficult when admiring this special piece to take your eyes off of the legendary Baker, a member of the College Football Hall of Fame.
