Interesting stories to go along with this formidable memento from the NHL's 2nd Annual All-Star Game and presented to Toronto's new captain, Ted Kennedy. Even though the Maple Leafs had captured the Stanley Cup the previous spring (thanks in large part to Kennedy's eight playoff goals), the game was played in Chicago since Black Hawks' president Bill Tobin had been instrumental in establishing the inaugural game and was promised the '48 event. The other peculiarity was the November 3rd date, three weeks after the regular season had started. The All-Stars beat the Leafs 3-1 with all scoring coming in the second period which saw Gordie Howe (first All-Star game!) and Gus Mortson duke it out. As for the “Kimberly Pockette” pen that Kennedy received at a luncheon earlier in the day at the LaSalle Hotel, it measures 5” long and is inscribed “T. Kennedy - NHL All-Stars vs World's Champions Toronto Maple Leafs - Chicago - Nov. 3, 1948 - Presented by Chicago Black Hawks.” Wonderful keepsake was kept with pride by Teeder Kennedy for over 50 years.
