Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction - March 2007
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 3/27/2007
Memory-provoking miniature “Avco World Trophy” was presented to goaltender Joe Daley after he helped backstop the Winnipeg Jets to the WHA playoff championship in the spring of 1978. Splitting duties with Gary Bromley, Daley was in goal as the Jets completed a four- game sweep of New England in the finals, winning the clincher 5-3 in front of hometown fans. After a 50-win, 102-point season, the Jets had first knocked off Birmingham in five semi-final games. The names of the trophy, team and Daley are on engraved plaques on one side of the personal award while each team member is listed on a big plate on the opposite side. The top of the trophy, which has an overall height of just under 13”, includes a pewter globe of the world encased in Lucite, upon which a silver-plated bowl sits. In excellent condition with some cleanable spots of tarnish to mention, the Balfour-produced memento is a formidable piece of WHA/Jets history and will come with a 5” by 7” photo of Daley, Hull and others posing with the actual Avco World Trophy.
