Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction - March 2007

Impressive silver-plated miniature James Norris Trophy was presented to Washington Capitals’ blueliner Rod Langway at the conclusion of the 1983-84 season, one which saw the all-star win the award for the second consecutive season. A physical, mostly defensive defenceman, Langway’s poise and leadership were such that his all-round ability garnered him the Norris ahead of the usual offensive-minded recipients. A participant in six straight NHL All-Star games and member of both the Hockey Hall of Fame and U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame, Rod’s name is engraved along with “1983-84” on a metal plaque affixed to the octagonal-shaped wooden base here, with engraving on the large bowl explaining the award. It reads “James Norris Memorial Trophy - Presented by The Norris Family to the National Hockey League for Perpetual Competition – To be Awarded Annually to the Regular Defense Player who Demonstrates the Greatest All-Round Ability in that Position - 1954.” Rising 13 1/2” high, the trophy is in brilliant, difficult-to-hope-for-nicer condition. A wondrous sight to behold and to add to a trophy case, it will be accompanied by a letter of authenticity signed by one of the best ever American-raised defenceman, Rod Langway.
