Raising the art form of penalty killing to an exact science, Derek Sanderson was one of the NHL’s all-time premier practitioners of playing with a man short, with his prodigious face-off abilities and zealous checking forever frustrating the opposition. As then-current Stanley Cup champions, the 1970-71 season witnessed Sanderson and the Bruins finish first in the East, losing a mere 17 contests. This Prince of Wales trophy was presented to “Turk” for the Bruins’ status as the 1970-71 East Division regular season champions. At 13” in height, four silver-plated hockey sticks rise up from a 2 ½” wooden base to support a cup with an affixed coat of arms and removable lid. A plaque affixed over the front of the wooden base states, “Prince of Wales Trophy”, with “Derek Sanderson” engraved beneath, with a second plaque over the reverse sporting "NHL Champions – Winners 1970-71 – Boston Bruins”. Hailing from his personal collection, a signed LOA from Derek Sanderson will accompany this majestic trophy.
The trophy exhibits moderate surface wear throughout, with the finish worn in areas beneath the rim and along edges, with additional wear over the affixed plaques and wooden base. The lid shows a number of scratches and has been glued-down, with two of the extended wreath sections broken off. The trophy is also loose from the base at two of the four mounted areas. Despite the condition concerns, the desirable trophy presents wonderfully, and represents a notable season for the Bruins and Sanderson, with the superstar registering his career-best 29 goals.
