A breathtaking and memory-provoking sight for New York Islanders’ faithful is this silver-plated miniature Stanley Cup that commemorates the Islanders first of four consecutive playoff successes. After being eliminated by the Rangers in the Cup semi-finals in 1979 following a franchise-best (up until then) 116 points, the Islanders “went all the way” in the 1980 post-season, reaching the pinnacle of the hockey world on May 24th. The Nassau County Coliseum was the place and Bob Nystrom the hero when he scored at 7:11 of overtime in game six of the finals, giving New York a 5-4 win over the Flyers and ultimate bragging rights. Led by Conn Smthe Trophy-winner Bryan Trottier, linemates Mike Bossy and Clark Gillies, captain Denis Potvin, late-season addition Butch Goring and goaltender Billy Smith, the Islanders had previously eliminated Los Angeles (3-1), Boston (4-1) and Buffalo (4-2). The team leaders’ names are engraved in three columns on the barrel of this 13” high trophy and joined by those of wonderful supporting cast members Bourne, Tonelli, Henning Persson, Morrow, Merrick, Howatt, Langevin, Lane, Duane Sutter and others. The names of GM Bill Torrey and Hall of Fame coach Al Arbour are among those engraved above. Presented to Islander legend Clark Gillies, the sensational display piece is in excellent condition and is one that all serious Islander supporters would love to have on their mantle. Autographed on the green felt that lines the bottom of the black wooden base, the stirring keepsake will be accompanied by Clark Gillies’ signed letter of authenticity.
