Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction March 2010
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 3/16/2010
The NHL All-Star Game went on hiatus in 1979 as the league's best players faced the Soviet Union in a three-game series at Madison Square Garden. Borje Salming wore #26 when he suited up for the NHL All-Stars in the Challenge Cup competition, his customary #21 already claimed by Boston's Don Marcotte. Salming joined fellow Swedes Ulf Nilsson and Anders Hedberg as the only Europeans on what was otherwise another edition of Team Canada. After a 4-2 win in the opener on Feb. 6, the NHL stars dropped the next two games, including a humiliating 6-0 loss in the rubber match. Gorgeous white dureen jersey is tagged in the neck by Gerry Cosby in size 52. An embroidered NHL crest is on the front with smaller league shields on the shoulders. The numbers and individual surname letters (no nameplate) are in tackle twill and sewn-on. Game wear includes a faint slash on the left elbow and nicks and dings on both shoulders. This historic Challenge Cup jersey from Borje Salming's personal collection comes with his signed letter of authenticity.
