Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction November 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/28/2023
Lending his considerable hockey expertise to a number of NHL clubs while serving as head coach, executive and general manager, Bob Gainey spent his entire Hall of Fame playing career in a Montreal Canadiens sweater, with four NHL All-Star Game appearances made along with earning the Conn Smythe as the MVP of the 1979 playoffs. The Peterborough native would hoist Lord Stanley’s hardware an impressive five times, including his final time as a player in 1985-86, when the offered keepsake was presented to Gainey as a member of the 1986 Stanley Cup champion Montreal Canadiens. Constructed of precious 10K gold, the stunning ring features 23 shimmering diamonds – one for each Stanley Cup won by the historic club – set within a raised gold CH logo on the tableau of the ring. “Coupe Stanley Cup” is spelled out in raised gold letters arching around the perimeter with “Champions” along the bottom dividing the “19” on the left side from “86” on the right side to complete the circle. The ring’s left shank has “Canadiens” in raised letters above an embossed image of the Stanley Cup with 23 engraved on the top of the barrel, and an NHL crest logo on the bottom. A banner flying behind the Cup is engraved with the results of the Canadiens’ four playoff series wins. The right shank features “Gainey” embossed above a raised gold CH logo painted in red, white and blue enamel, with “23” beneath. The size 11 ½ ring has a weight of approx 35 grams, with just light overall wear present, with a few minor scratches visible over the outer band along with a couple very small edge nicks. There is also a small dark blemish within the inner band. We should also note that the hallmark within the inner band has been removed, most likely due to buffing or resizing. Capping off this final momentous championship as the Habs' leader and team captain, Gainey has insured his immortality as one of the greatest Canadiens players in history. A signed LOA from Bob Gainey will accompany.
