Sporting one of hockey’s most stylish monikers as “The Roadrunner”, Yvan Cournoyer spent his entire HOF career with the Montreal Canadiens, with the Conn Smythe winner claiming an amazing 10 Stanley Cup championships. From the pinnacle of his illustrious career in the early-1970s where he garnered a trio of consecutive 40-goal seasons as well as scoring his milestone 250th (1972-73) and 300th (1973-74) career goals, we have a photo-matched Canadiens alternate captain’s jersey worn by the Drummondville native, circa 1972-74. A Wilson label with handwritten “40” sizing sits affixed to the collar, with a second, washed out label placed directly beneath. Styled with the iconic CH team crest fully administered in layered red, white and blue tackle twill, “12” appears over the sleeves and verso in matching material, with an intact garter-style fight strap. Custom-shortened sleeves have also been utilized on the tie-neck garment, with the length possibly shortened by the team to its current 27 ½”. Most likely hailing from the 1973-74 season due to photographic evidence, and hammered with use including numerous dark marks, burns and team repairs throughout along with red paint transfer over the right sleeve, Getty Images #53123107 and #162159234 have both been matched to the diagonal black mark on the lower portion of the team crest, and to the additional diagonal mark below, as well as to the black marks on the lower right sleeve. An LOA from Classic Auctions will accompany.
We should also note that Henri Richard (wearing the Captain's "C") and Frank Mahovlich (wearing an alternate captain's "A") are pictured presenting a painting on ice to Yvan Cournoyer (wearing an alternate captain's "A") in each Getty Image, and with Cournoyer wearing the “A” beginning in the 1972-73 season and Mahovlich’s last season with Montreal being 1973-74, the jersey can be pinpointed to the 1972-74 era.
