Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2018
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/6/2018
A banner year for superstar Yvan Cournoyer, the 1971-72 NHL season would conclude with the HOFer scoring a career-high 47 goals. This would be followed within a few short months by the 1972 Canada/Russia Summit Series, with The Roadrunner set to represent his nation and become a part of Canadian hockey history. Hailing from that historic tournament, we have a Team Canada jersey that was worn prior to the tournament in the pre-tournament training camp and/or in the Red vs White inter-squad games played at MLG in Toronto (first match occurred on Aug 22nd). It was also donned in inter-squad matches held at practices before the MLG games. It is known that each player received multiple jerseys, with photos in the 1973 book "Twenty-seven days in September" clearly showing Team Canada players wearing these white jerseys in inter-squad games. This can be seen in a number of Getty Images as well. Remnants of the original Maska label are visible along the collar, with the important sweater measuring-out to roughly a size 46. Featuring a solid red 7-point tackle twill maple leaf rising from the waist to the chest, “12” appears over verso in matching material, with “Canada” placed beneath in individual red twill letters. Originally obtained decades ago from a large international game-worn jersey collection with this example gifted by Cournoyer himself before leaving for Moscow back in 1972 according to the original owner. An LOA from Classic Auctions will accompany.
In absolutely gorgeous condition with no unsightly wear or damage, the historic sweater does exhibit a few very small rust-coloured stains over the back of each sleeve, over the right shoulder and between the reverse numbers. There is also a small rectangular-shaped section beneath the reverse numbers that contains some off-colour spotting.
