Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2021

Considered the biggest trade in the history of the sport, Wayne Gretzky officially said goodbye to the Edmonton Oilers and his native homeland as a current Stanley Cup champion in the summer of 1988, and set out for the sunny shores of California, joining the Los Angeles Kings and the American conscience at large. Wayne would see action in 78 regular-season contests his first season in Tinseltown, with his 168 points more than enough to garner his eighth-consecutive Hart Memorial Trophy as the NHL’s MVP.
Hailing from his inaugural campaign with Los Angeles, we have a pair of photo-matched gloves worn by The Great One in 1988-89. Jofa 686 L models in Kings’ solid black with white accents, the gloves feature both screened and cloth labels, with “99” decals added over each thumb protector. Moderate game-use is exhibited on the desirable pair, with rubbing to the leather in spots along with wear to the identifiers, with each palm also fully intact and showing wear. The “99” decals have discoloured over time and are original to the gloves. An included numeric image from the 1988-89 season has been matched to the broken-off sections on the right middle edge and bottom right corner of the second “9” on the thumb protector of the left glove, as well as to marks on the Jofa logo and lettering on the thumb. This image also shows the black marks in the “OF” of “JOFA” on the wrist protector of the right glove, the black mark through the “686L”, and the two big white marks both below and above it. Any game-used Wayne Gretzky item is paramount, with these offered first-year Kings photo-matched specimens ready to highlight any collection.
