Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2020

From one Hall of Fame superstar and captain to another, we have a highly desirable stick used by the incomparable Wayne Gretzky during the Stanley Cup-championship season of 1986-87, with this example special as it was gifted to legendary Montreal Canadiens’ captain and 1979 Conn Smythe Trophy winner, Bob Gainey. A Titan TPM 2020 Ultraglass model with “W. Gretzky” stamped to the upper shaft, the original black tape remains in place over the blade and white (now yellowed) over black on the handle/knob (with the gauze wrap missing). A date stamp of “27 Mar 1987” is visible over the underside of the lower shaft, with a factory code of “1-002” near the heel. The stick exhibits nice game-use, with the tape torn along a section of the underside of the blade, with a few marks and abrasions to the lower shaft along with a few specks of red paint transfer. There is also some minor tape residue over a few areas of the shaft. We should also note that considering how late in the season the date stamp appears (March 27), the possibility exists of this stick seeing use in the 1987 Stanley Cup playoffs. Originating from Bob Gainey’s personal collection, his signed LOA will accompany.
