Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2019

A nice collection of vintage lumber totaling six is offered, highlighted by a pair of circa-1910s Salyerds brand sticks. Included, we have five one-piece models, with a turn-of-the-century ice polo stick, the aforementioned Salyerds examples with a “See-Saw” model and practice model – both with good portions of their original paper labels remaining, followed by a generic unmarked stick from approx the 1920s, and a rarely-seen Red Horner signature model Bradford stick from the 1930s. The final stick is a 1940s/50s two-piece “Olympic” model produced by Quebec’s “SSW” – Super Strong Wood. The Salyerds sticks are both shorter examples giving hint to their earlier vintage, while the ice polo stick appears to feature a small gold emblem – possibly a maker’s mark - over one side of the curled blade.
Each of the Salyerds sticks show expected wear with solid blades, with a small chunk out of the lower shaft on the See-Saw model. Both labels show wear with some loss as mentioned. The ice polo stick shows heavy wear to the blade, with a large V-shaped crack over the upper shaft. Despite this, the stick remains fairly solid. The generic one-piece has wear to the blade including a long crack starting at the tip, along with tape residue, with a number of large cracks and splits over the upper shaft. The Red Horner-model stick has a solid blade with wear to the underside, with some of the original striping accent intact. The Red Horner signature stamping is bold on one side and faded on the other, with just general wear from use to the shaft. Lastly, the SSW stick has worn black tape remaining on the blade and knob, with cracking and chipping to the blade along the tip. There is also some masking tape that was added over both the lower and upper shaft.
