Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2022
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 3/1/2022
While the sport has witnessed netminders going maskless for over half of it’s existence, many inventive models were attempted to protect the goaltenders face throughout the mid-century, with the plexiglass masks produced by St Marys’ D.G. Louch beginning in the 1950s some of the best and most desirable for collectors. This lot offers a group of 4 vintage masks including a rare Louch “half face” mask with the original box, a 1960s/70s style thick plastic mask and a pair of 1940s/50s wire “goggle” masks. First, the Louch mask resembles a modern visor, as opposed to the “full face” Louch masks usually seen that cover the entire face. The thick plexiglass with black rubber boarder along the top sports the original Louch red leather forehead strap, with just light wear present including scratches to the plexiglass. The original box has Louch graphics along with instructions affixed to the interior, with a small bottle of Louch “crystal clear cleaner” included (box shows light to moderate wear). The plastic mask is somewhat crude in construction, with the original canvas and leather straps, with moderate use and residue along the bottom, with a name handwritten to the mask and straps. The goggle-style masks are both wire cages with reinforced leather, with both showing moderate use and featuring the original strapping, with a Reach logo stamped to one strap.
