Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2018
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/19/2018
The logical conclusion to the plethora of bruised cheekbones and bloodied noses that NHL netminders regularly encountered since hockey’s inception, we have an early pretzel-style goalie mask from the 1960s, with this example similar in style to the masks produced by early maker Bill Birchmore. In solid black with strapping intact, the mask’s crude styling and thin fiberglass define its age, with just a pair of small rubber pads affixed to the interior remaining. A few small fine cracks are visible including beneath the nose, with the main section across the nose broken along one side of the interior. Seeing considerable use as evidenced by the tattered and well used strap, the mask remains solid, boasting outstanding vintage aesthetics and wonderful display capabilities.
