This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/16/2020
A pleasant way to spend an afternoon if no hockey games are on, this large vintage hockey puzzle collection totals fourteen and ranges from the 1950s to 1970s, with both the assembled puzzles and boxes ideal for display. First, we have mid-1950s 500-piece full-colour puzzles/boxes by International Dispensaco for the Montreal Canadiens and Detroit Red Wings (Champions 1954), followed by additional International Dispensaco 480-piece puzzles for the Montreal Canadiens (two, with one for “Champions 1953”, the other, for the 1953 Stanley Cup “Winning Goal”), and 460-piece puzzles for the Quebec Aces, Montreal Royals and Chicoutimi Sagueneens. Rounding out the lot, there are six player-puzzles from the 1970s by American Publishing including Yvan Cournoyer and Rod Gilbert.
Each puzzle is accompanied by its original box, with the earlier boxes shrink-wrapped for display. We should also note that we’re unsure if each is complete, with the majority appearing partially assembled and then put back into each box in sections. The full-colour boxes by International Dispensaco for the Montreal Canadiens and Detroit Red Wings are approx 9 ½” x 12” with light wear, with the additional five International Dispensaco puzzle boxes approx 9” x 11” give or take, with moderate wear to each, with clear tape affixed to the Chicoutimi box visible beneath the saran wrap. The 1970s player puzzle boxes are 9 ¾” x 15”, and feature wonderfully illustrated covers, with examples present for the aforementioned Cournoyer and Gilbert, along with Gary Unger, Ken Hodge, Lou Nanne and Frank Mahovlich. The majority of the boxes show light to moderate wear, with some staining to the Unger lid and clear tape and damage to the Cournoyer box. The final puzzle, also from American Publishing, is a canister example from 1972 entitled “Pittsburgh Penguins vs New York Rangers (moderate wear to the paper label).
