Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2015

The Toronto Maple Leafs won the Stanley Cup for a third year in a row in the spring of 1964. Attributed to deceased HOFer Harold Ballard, this 1963-64 Maple Leafs personal Stanley Cup Trophy comes from someone close to the former Leafs owner and is the vintage trophy Leafs players, staff and executives received back in the day. The Leafs beat Montreal in a seven-game semi-final before facing Detroit in the final in another series that went the distance. Defenseman Bobby Baun scored the Game 6 overtime winner on a broken ankle and finished the series two days later at Maple Leaf Gardens as Toronto hoisted the Cup for a third straight year. Ballard, who was the Leafs’ executive VP in 1963-64, is one of 12 HOFers named on the barrel of the trophy below “National Hockey League Stanley Cup Winners 1963-1964 Toronto Maple Leafs Hockey Club” along with Imlach, Clancy, Armstrong, Bathgate, Bower, Horton, Kelly, Keon, Mahovlich, Pulford and Stanley. The trophy stands 12 7/8” tall and is nicely preserved with a few scratches on the back part of the barrel and some cleanable tarnish. The round black wood base is bare in several areas that have lost its paint but the green felt bottom remains in place. A rare opportunity for an original Stanley Cup trophy commemorating the Maple Leafs’ three straight wins in the early-1960s.
