Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2018

Perched atop Silver Age fandom and the genesis of the “troubled teenagers” that would benefit the Marvel line of characters, Spider-Man first introduced himself to young comic book fans in the summer of 1962, appearing in Amazing Fantasy 15 – the final book in the Amazing Adult Fantasy series. The alter-ego of unassuming teen Peter Parker, the sales of Amazing Fantasy 15 were a success for the fledgling publisher, with a vehicle needed to propel the webbed crusader to further heights and sales. “The Amazing Spider-Man” was that vehicle of choice, with the first issue appearing on newsstands early in 1963. After half a century of circulation along with endless trials and tribulations for an especially awkward Peter, the title ceased publication late in 2012, with #700 the final issue of the original, unforgettable run.
Ready to augment any world-class Silver Age or ASM collection, we have a highly desirable unrestored copy of The Amazing Spider-Man 1 CGC graded 7.0 Fine/Very Fine – Off White to White Pages. Originating from a cherished childhood collection and fresh to the hobby, this recently graded specimen feature’s especially bright and vibrant colours, with just light toning to the covers exhibited along with minimal spine wear. Also void of the unsightly chipping that routinely plagues these earlier Silver Age books, this copy’s pleasing visual appeal and pop art aesthetics will impress any discerning collector… even Aunt May! A collaborative Lee/Ditko masterpiece that cemented itself within the North American youth’s consciousness, this first ‘origin-retelling’ issue not only began arguably the most venerated superhero comic book run, it also introduced the world to one of Spider-Man’s greatest foes in Chameleon, as well as his greatest antagonist in J. Jonah Jameson.
