Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction February 2018

The first junior tournament in which Canada participated, the 1974 World Junior Championships occurred in the Soviet Union, with the host nation going undefeated. Featuring the best under-20 players each nation could contribute, only Canada was represented by a club team, with the Peterborough Petes taking home the bronze. Hailing from the collection of longtime CHL and WHL president Ed Chynoweth and consigned by his direct family, we have a pair of scarce Team Canada jerseys attributed to the tournament. Labels from Doug Laurie grace each collar, with “Canada” placed diagonally across the chest of each in white tackle twill. Accented with red sleeve numbers along with affixed stars over the shoulders, a white maple leaf with inserted red “JR” letters sits over each left breast. An LOA from the Chynoweth family will accompany.
Similar in style to those worn by the players of WHA Team Canada in the 1974 Canada-Russia Series, the number 15 jersey measures-out to roughly a size 42, while the number 11 appears to be a size 40. Paul Evans wore #15 with the Petes in 1973-74, while it’s unknown who wore #11. Each jersey shows wear with a few marks, with some very light staining/discolouration in spots.
First cutting his managerial teeth as an assistant general manager with the Saskatoon Blades of the Western Hockey League in 1971-72, Ed Chynoweth then began a quarter-century love affair with the WHL, serving as its first full-time president through 1996 (with the exception of a single year). During his tenure as WHL president, Ed was responsible for the forming of the Canadian Major Junior Hockey League (CHL) in 1973-74, with the WHL, QMJHL and OHL brought into the fold, with a position as the first president of the CMJHL literally invented for the Dodsland native. Chynoweth was also awarded a WHL expansion franchise, the Edmonton Ice, while being regularly sourced for committees that oversaw a number of important hockey facets including Canada’s World Junior Team Program. Other positions would follow for Chynoweth, as he was appointed to the Federal Government Commission of Fair Play in 1986, as well as the International Centre of Excellence and Hockey Development Committee in 1987. Other awards and accolades would also follow, with the CMJHL Distinguished Service award garnered twice, along with the WHL championship trophy renamed in Ed’s honour in 2007.
