Once voted the most popular athlete in Detroit sports history, and referred to by Red Wings supporters as "Stevie Y", "Stevie Wonder", or just "The Captain", Steve Yzerman skated a lengthy 22 seasons for the Detroit Red Wings including 19 as team captain. The superstar would enjoy capping six-consecutive 100 plus-point seasons while earning selection to 10 All-Star Games, and would lead the Wings to a trio of Stanley Cup championships in just 6 seasons. Additional accolades included capturing the Lester B. Pearson Award in 1989, the Conn Smythe Trophy in 1998, the Frank J. Selke Trophy in 2000 and the Lester Patrick Trophy in 2006, while also winning gold medals at the Winter Olympics and Canada Cup while representing his nation. The longest-serving captain in Detroit Red Wings franchise history, Yzerman remains the club’s all-time assists leader, and received his rightful Hall of Fame enshrinement in 2009.
Originating from just his sophomore season in Motown, we offer a highly desirable photo-matched Red Wings jersey worn by the superstar in 1984-85, a season that witnessed his selection to the All-Star Game as an 18-year old – the first in history to receive the honour. With no labeling remaining and measuring-out to roughly a size 50, a CCM crest with asterisk is sewn to the reverse hem. Styled with the classic winged-wheel Red Wings team crest that features embroidered detailing, Stevie Y’s trademark “19” appears over the sleeves and verso in single white twill, with “Yzerman” arching over the upper reverse in matching material. A dual-clasp fight strap has also been utilized, and we should note that the jersey has been customized, with the waist hemmed-up approx one inch.
Exhibiting considerable game-use with dark marks over the lower front and additional marks over each sleeve including a small area of blue paint transfer over the right elbow, there are a couple large stick marks on the reverse, with a large team repair visible on the left reverse shoulder. The team crest also sports a bit of fraying, with the fight strap showing signs of numerous washings. We should also note that the team crest, numbers and “Yzerman” over the upper reverse are all original to the jersey, with no signs of alterations. Getty Image #450375870 (Dec 5, 1984) has been matched to the frayed white threading present beneath the top border of the team crest, and specifically to its length and placement, with the small linear black mark visible on the right sleeve’s number also showing. Getty Image # 467422945 has been matched to the frayed white threading present beneath the top border of the team crest, and specifically to its length and placement, with the black mark directly beneath the team crest also visible.
Representing the genesis of his prominent Hall of Fame career as the modern flagship player of the famed Detroit Red Wings, this prized Motor City specimen hails from the Michael Wexler collection and will be accompanied by an LOA from Classic Auctions.
