Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2021
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/30/2021
Joining the list of notable NHL players born “across the pond”, as they say, including Charlie Gardiner, Dunc Munro and big, bad Joe Hall, Steve Smith is one of only two UK-born players to have appeared in over 100 NHL playoff games. The skilled defenceman would guard bluelines for Edmonton, Chicago and Calgary throughout his NHL tenure, and raise Lord Stanley’s hardware thrice with the Oilers. From his final season in Alberta, we have an Oilers alternate captain’s jersey worn by Smith in 1990-91. A Maska label with “11 90” production sticker and handwritten “56 GC 2” is affixed to the collar near “90/91 2” handwritten in black marker, with embroidered CCM and NHL crests over the reverse hem. Styled with a layered Oilers tackle twill team crest, “5” is sewn to the sleeves and verso in matching material, with “S Smith” across the nameplate in royal blue twill. The sleeves have also been custom-shortened. An Oilers document and MeiGray COR will accompany.
Sporting light to moderate game-use, there are a few random marks present, with a pair of small holes on the left sleeve. There are also a couple small stains on the team crest.
